Upper body exercises

This exercise program is designed for anyone:

  • With an arm that is limited by tone (too much or too little), decreased strength, and decreased range of motion
  • Looking for ways to improve strength and range of motion in their affected arm
  • Who can follow directions to achieve proper positioning

What you will need:

  • A firm surface to sit on, such as your bed, couch, or chair
  • A rod, such as shower rod, cane, broom stick, or therapy bar
  • Exercise cuff, ace wrap, or sock to fasten hand to rod
  • Washcloth to build up under the rod to make it easier to grasp
  • A helper to put your arm in the correct position or help you move to different positions

Low-impact weight-bearing exercises

This exercise program is designed for anyone:

  • With an arm that is limited by tone (too much or too little) and decreased strength
  • Looking for ways to improve strength and muscle tone in their affected arm
  • Anyone who can follow directions to achieve the right positioning

What you will need:

  • A supportive chair with back support
  • A firm surface, such as your bed, couch, or chair
  • A book to place your hand on if the surface is too soft
  • A surface to lean forward on, such as a table
  • Weight-bearing paddle, washcloth, or half-foam ball, if needed
  • A helper to put your arm in the correct position or help you transfer to different position
