Leading causes of traumatic brain injury

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, an estimated 2.8 million people sustain new brain injuries annually in the U.S., where more than 5 million people live with the lingering effects of brain injury.

Brain injuries can happen to anyone. They are most common in men between the ages of 15 to 24. Children under the age of 5 and older adults over age 75 also have a high incidence of brain injury. A brain injury can affect almost any aspect of life.

The leading causes of traumatic brain injury are:

  • Falls: 40.5%
  • Motor vehicle-traffic crashes: 14.3%
  • Struck by/against events (including recreation-related events): 15.5%
  • Assaults: 10.7%
  • Unknown: 19.0%
