Leading causes of traumatic brain injury
An estimated 2.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) annually in the U.S., according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Brain injuries can happen to anyone. They are most common in men between the ages of 15 to 24. Children under the age of 5 and older adults over age 75 also have a high incidence of brain injury. A brain injury can affect almost any aspect of life.
The leading causes of traumatic brain inury are:
- Falls: 40.5%
- Motor vehicle-traffic crashes: 14.3%
- Struck by/against events (including recreation-related events): 15.5%
- Assaults: 10.7%
- Unknown: 19.0%
