According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 2.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. Brain injuries can happen to anyone. They are most common in men between the ages of 15 to 24. Children under the age of 5 and older adults over age 75 also have a high incidence of brain injury. A brain injury can affect almost any aspect of life.
The leading causes of traumatic brain inury are:
- Falls: 40.5%
- Motor vehicle-traffic crashes: 14.3%
- Struck by/against events (includes recreation-related events): 15.5%
- Assaults: 10.7%
- Unknown: 19.0%
