Lymphedema is an abnormal collection of lymphatic fluid in the tissues just beneath the skin. This swelling commonly occurs in the arm or leg, but it may also occur in other body areas including the chest, trunk, head and neck, and genitals. Lymphedema develops due to trauma, lack of activation of muscles, surgery, or other conditions impacting the lymphatic system (ie Deep Vein Thrombosis, Heart Failure). The lymphatic system is part of the immune system which assists with removing toxins and waste from the circulatory system. When lymphedema is not managed, it can result in skin infections, heavier limbs, pain, and can impact neurological recovery.
